Enforcement in numbers: August 2026

11 market manipulation enforcement actions recorded in August 2026, in line with the trailing twelve-month median, with $65,000 in disclosed civil penalties.

11 market manipulation enforcement actions were recorded in August 2026. That is in line with the trailing twelve-month median, computed from this library’s own records over the preceding twelve months.

Before the numbers, the caveat that governs all of them: month-to-month variation in enforcement counts is mostly noise. A single multi-defendant sweep announced on one day can move a month by twenty per cent, staff availability and quarter-end timing shape the announcement calendar, and the conduct being charged usually occurred years earlier. Nothing in a single month is a trend, and this post will not describe one as if it were.

The month in figures

MeasureAugust 2026Trailing 12-month median
Actions recorded119.5
Actions with a disclosed penalty1
Total disclosed penalties$65,000
Median penalty$65,000
Largest single penalty$65,000
Referencing a criminal parallel4 of 11

Note that the largest single action accounts for more than half of the month’s disclosed penalties. Aggregate penalty totals are almost always dominated this way, which is why the median is the more useful number and why this site reports both.

What was charged

No single technique dominates the month.

The charts

All eight charts have been regenerated against the current data:

Each carries its own methodology and an explicit list of what it does not show. The underlying figures are downloadable as CSV, and the whole case library is at /cases.json.

What this does not tell you

How much market manipulation there is. This measures enforcement — conduct that was detected, charged and announced — and the relationship between that and the underlying rate of manipulation is unknown and cannot be estimated from this data. A month with more actions is a month with more announcements.

Every action listed here is described as the issuing regulator described it. Where a matter is recorded as filed, the conduct is alleged and unproven. See our editorial policy.
